christmas craft for children, creating lanterns from oranges, lanterns made from oranges, nadia's christmas lanterns
Materials
large thick healthy oranges
string
short candles
Directions
This project requires the use of sharp tools and fire and therefore it should only be done under the supervision of an adult. Also, keep a keen eye on the lantern when lit.
Slice off the top of the orange about 1/6 of the way down.
Hollow out the inside using a spoon. You may also have to remove some pulp from the sliced off top.
Put the top back on the orange and mark three equally spaced adjacent spots about one centimeter from the edges. Pierce through the dots.
Cut out various shapes. The lantern seems to work best if the cutouts are placed randomly across the surface.
Cut three strings about 60 centimeters long each, insert them through the adjacent holes, lower the lid, balance well and connect all in one knot.
Secure a candle within using some melted wax.
You’re done! Hang in a safe place where you can keep an eye on your work.
